Bollon flystrike workshop to prepare sheep for wet season ahead

NEWS RELEASE

Queensland and northern NSW sheep graziers will receive timely advice on tackling flystrike ahead of the wet season at an upcoming workshop to be held in Bollon, Qld.

The summer rainfall period traditionally triggers the arrival of flies in their millions, which can pose a health risk for sheep.

The Flystrike Prevention Workshop will be conducted by the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre (Sheep CRC) and the SRS Group, with the support of the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) and the Leading Sheep program.

Case Study - Breeding for Flystrike Resistance

Introduction

Record rainfall across Eastern Australia throughout spring and summer 2010-11 resulted in a boom season for graziers, but the lingering warm, wet conditions also proved the perfect environment for flystrike. But not all flocks were as affected with a group of Merino producers proving that it is possible to breed sheep that can survive in hot, humid conditions without regular chemical treatment, or mulesing.

Case Study - Breeding for Increased Fertility

The SRS® Breeding System

SRS® Merino sheep are the result of selecting for low primary fibre diameter and high density plus high length of wool fibres. The breeding system was developed by SRS® Chief Scientist and Breeding Consultant, Dr Jim Watts, a research veterinarian who specializes in skin and fleece biology. It is based on Moore’s pre-papilla cell hypothesis of follicle formation and fibre growth.
